One of my favorite rookies coming into the league last season was Cam Akers, as I thought his skillset and talent would not only mesh well but thrive in this McVay offense. The season started out slow for Akers, thanks to injury that cost him two games (weeks 3 and 4). In addition the team utilized two other backs routinely Malcolm Brown and Darrell Henderson. The good news is as the season went on the talent rose to the top of the depth chart, and that talent was Akers, who finished the season strong. This brings renewed optimism in a player I was very high on in 2020. The thing with Akers is though he will see the majority of the work in 2021, Darrell Henderson will still be a factor, as McVay has stated a few times this off season he wants to model the Shanahan approach at the position, which is utilize multiple backs. Though this makes sense to preserve your assets, especially in a longer season, we as fantasy owners may not like it. Fantasy owners, don't be worried about Akers, because I fully expect the lost opportunity to Henderson will be offset by the uptick in passing work Akers is going to see. With Matthew Stafford under center I feel Akers is set to see a significant jump in every receiving category from a season ago. Also as far as a runner Akers still is going to see 15-18 attempts a game, which with an average of 4.3 Yards per attempt will add up, but in terms of betting this line of 1,100.5 rush yards no thank you, as it is way to close.
As far as touchdowns go Akers underwhelmed in this category in 2020, totaling only three, two of which was on the ground. Both of the rushing touchdowns Akers had came when the Rams were inside the red zone, which is an area I like to look at for runners, as more carries/opportunities inside the twenty leads to better chances of scoring TD's and fantasy points. When looking at the Rams red zone carries last season Akers had 31, which made up 21.3% of his 145 rush attempts last season. If we dig a little deeper we discover that 21 of those 31 red zone carries came within the ten yard line, where the two rushing touchdowns fell. With Malcolm Brown now in Miami I do project an uptick in this category for Akers, as Brown totaled five touchdowns within the ten yard line. Be careful though because Akers won't absorb all that work as Henderson himself had 4 touchdowns within the ten yard line in 2020.
My Projection: 249 RA - 1,072 YDS - 9.2 TD's
How to Bet
-UNDER- 9 Rushing TD (-130)
-NO BET- 1,100.5 Rush Yards
Cam Akers is expected to miss the entire 2021 season after suffering a torn Achilles training on 7/20/21.
